SAEBRS Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian, 

In 2004, the Illinois State Board of Education adopted learning standards for children’s social and emotional development, in addition to academic standards that already exist for each grade. All schools in Illinois are charged with the responsibility of partnering with parents to teach children how to manage their emotions, get along with others, and make good decisions. 

One way to gather information about a child’s development is through a Social/Emotional screener. The goal of the universal school-wide screening is to identify students early who may need social/emotional support. Two times this year, students in grades 2 through 12 will be asked to fill out the screener during the school day with support from school staff or parents.  This screener helps identify areas in a child’s social/emotional health where the child has the possibility to benefit from extra support. 

Options for screening kindergarten and first grade students will resume when in-person instruction resumes.  However, if you have concerns for your kindergarten or first grade student in the meantime, please reach out to your child’s teacher or the building-based school social worker, school psychologist, or principal.

If your child’s score on the screener is highly elevated (meaning there are concerns about his or her social-emotional development) your school social worker will contact you to discuss options about how we can best support you and your child’s needs.
