On April 24th, Dr. Robert Russell, M.D., FACS, FRACS presented a workshop to the students. The power point presentation allowed students to view before and after photos of the physicians work. A descriptive of surgery process was explained to the students. The surgery performed on patients included reconstructive which resulted from accidents, gun shot wounds, to birth defects. Also, aesthetic surgery to improve the patient appearance, such as face lifts and tummy tucks was presented. The students were captivated by the amazing results that are achieved through surgery.
Dr. Russell also volunteers for Operation Smile International, which treats children and adults around the world with congenital and acquired facial deformities. The change in the patient's lives through surgery was remarkable. The cost of surgery to repair a cleft palate for an international patient is only $250.00. The physicians pay their own costs for the over seas travel. There are opportunities for students to travel on the missions also at no cost.
