The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Springfield School District 186 are partnering to develop a mentoring program for approximately 75 students by establishing an Engineering Academy.
The goal of the Engineering Academy is to provide academic instruction that challenges high school students and introduces them to realistic engineering projects that encourage teamwork, problem solving and practical application while exposing them to exciting career opportunities in the transportation industry.
The Engineering Academy sessions will be held on October 24, October 31, November 7, November 14 and November 21, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at: IDOT 2300 S. Dirksen
The Academy will divide 75 students into three (3) classes. Each class will have a maximum of 25 students.
During this Academy, students will be introduced to design and structural engineering concepts. IDOT engineers will use a Bridge Builder module and curriculum designed by the Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) program. With the Bridge Builder module students will practice the math and science concepts a structural engineer uses to create a bridge.
The final session will be held on November 21, 2009. Each student team will present their final project to a pre-selected panel of judges, classmates, instructors and guests. The judges will determine three (3) winning teams. The winning teams will be announced and members of the teams will receive awards.
Applications are currently available at LMS. There is a quick turn around for the applications, but this is a wonderful opportunity that we do not want to miss.
