Mix It Up received mixed reviews at lunch today. Mix It Up is a nationwide campaign that encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries that separate them from each other and help build inclusive, welcoming learning environments. This will be our second year to participate at LMS. Students were "arranged" at lunch tables by the color of their shirts. This was an opportunity for students to eat lunch with others that they normally do not sit with. We provided chart paper, and asked students to share their perspective after the experience. Here are some student comments:
It was cool!
I liked sitting with different people
I met a new friend
It felt different
It was horrible
Let's keep it to 2 times a year
It was OK- no one talked to me, though
I liked sitting with different people, but I prefer my friends
Sometimes change comes slowly!
