Star Party with the Sangamon Astronomical Society:

Please join us for a star party on May11 at the S.A.S. Observatory. Plan to arrive anywhere from 7:30-8:00. We will start as soon as it gets dark. All family members are welcome to attend. If it is raining, the star party will be canceled. Be sure to check Mrs. Gates’s web site before heading out to the observatory.

On June 5th, The Springfield Astronomical Society and the astronomy department of UIS will hold a public event at South Wind Park starting at 5:15 pm for the public to view the planet Venus passing crossing the disk of the Sun. Because of the slightly different angles of the orbits of Earth and Venus, earthbound observers will not have another chance to see this transit for another 115 years.

News From Mrs Sophie in the cafeteria: It is getting close to the end of the school year and if students have any outstanding charges they need to be taken care of immediately. Beginning on Wednesday May 16, 8th grade students will not be able to charge. Their accounts must be paid up to date. They are not allowed to charge lunches in high school. Any money left on accounts will be carried over for next year.

News from Mrs Vanderwater in the Library: All library books must be turned in by Friday May 11th so that a library inventory can be completed. Also, the Library WILL NOT be open at lunchtime for the rest of the year. I will be in Room 9 helping students choose books for the “Used Book Give Away”. Students can select 2 books a day for summer reading.

8th grade students who will be attending Lanphier High School have a special opportunity for THIS SUMMER ONLY to attend summer school at LHS for FREE. Normally each of these courses is over $100.00, so this comes as a great savings for many families. These classes include English, Math, Science, History, Lifetime Fitness and several electives to include Driver’s Education. If you have any questions please see Ms Wickham or check the activity table in the main hallway.

Looking forward, please put Freshman Forward on your calendar! Freshman forward is a three-day freshman orientation held August 7-9, 2012.
Freshman Forward will be held from 8:24am -2:17pm all 3 days. Incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to interact with other freshman, upperclassmen, teachers and administrators. Sessions will include information to help make the transition to high school a smooth one.
