What do Parents as Teachers & Teen PAT offer for Families with Children Birth to Three ?

Parents as Teachers (located at The Wanless Building) is a parent education program for families in the Springfield School District with children prenatal to age three. PAT is grounded in the belief that parents are their children's first teacher and their home is a child's first classroom. PAT helps parents give their children the best possible start in life. There are so much brain growth and development that happens within a child during those early years. PAT would like to partner with you and offer support by helping you to lay down the foundations for later school success. There is no cost to eligible parents/guardians who live within the Springfield School District 186 area.

Families, who become a part of our program, will receive home visits twice a month with a PAT certified parent educator. The parent educator will work with you and your child in their natural environment to develop skills that will prepare for school. Our parent educators are trained in child development and use the Parents As Teachers curriculum.

Learning Together is a great opportunity to join other parents and participate in parent/child activities. We provide a semi-structured schedule that includes circle time, gym time and open play in a classroom setting. If you have a child, birth to 3 years of age and reside in Springfield School district you are welcome to attend. A copy of the schedule is available upon request by calling our office.

District 186 Parents as Teachers will conduct health and developmental screenings on each enrolled child two times per school year. The tools used are Parents as Teachers Health Form, Ages and Stages-3 and Ages and Stages-Social Emotional.

The Program helps the family connect to community resources available in Springfield.

Springfield 186 Parents as Teachers Program promotes literacy by incorporating books to every home visit. We also give a board book for the family to keep. This helps them start their own home library.

PAT 186 goals:

  • Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices.

  • Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues.

  • Prevent child abuse and neglect.

  • Increase children's school readiness and school success.
