SENIORS HEADED TO UNIV. OF ILLINOIS,URBANA: The Lincolnland Illini Club is offering a $750 tuition scholarship essay contest. The 200 word essay is your interpretation of the phrase "Why U of I?" Applications available from Mrs. Povse. Deadline is May 11.
Mrs. Povse has added a new link under Guidance on the SHS website called "Special Programs". Check it out.
SENIORS: The Springfield Education Association is offering a scholarship for students who plan to pursue a career in public school teaching.
The Springfield Lake Shore Improvement Association is offering a $1000 scholarship to the senior who can write the best essay on the topic, “What you would do to improve Lake Springfield?" See Mrs. Povse for applications.
Juniors or Seniors interested in becoming teachers: The Project Midstate Student Support at the University of Illinois, Springfield is now accepting applicants to the program which assists students who want to teach in the Springfield or Decatur public schools. Financial help is available for students in this program. See Mrs. Povse for details and an application. Deadline is March 31.
The Springfield Public Schools have combined with St. John's Hospital and College, Memorial Hospital and the Chamber of Commerce to offer a FREE Nursing Academy. 20 students will be selected on the basis of interest, GPA, recommendation and involvement in extra curriculars. Pick up an application in either the Main Office or the Guidance Office. Deadline is March 18.
SENIORS: As you receive your acceptances from colleges and universities please let Mr. Crum or Mrs. Povse know of any scholarships you have been awarded. We have a list started in Mrs. Povse's office. Later in the spring we will post this publicly so that all of our students may see how well you have done.
Join the Environmental Club by Choosing to Reuse. The Environmental Club is selling reusable lunch totes from the company Thirty-One. Choose from three different sizes and many different patterns and colors. See a member of the Environmental Club or Ms. Vander Leest in Room 510. Remember---CHOOSE TO REUSE!!!
SHS Trivia Night is Friday, March 25, 2011. Win a share of $1,000 in prize money, to be awarded to your favorite SHS sport, club or organization. Doors open 6p ~ Trivia at 7PM. Up to 10 players, includes food, soda and fun! The cost is $150 per table. Registration sheets are available on the SHS website or pick up one in the main office.
Current NHS seniors: please verify with Mrs. Ruedin which college you will be attending in the fall.
Current National Honor Society Members and New Inductees: Please attend a brief rehearsal in the auditorium today at 3:15. We will begin immediately after the bell.
Scholastic Bowl team won regionals last night! They will compete this weekend at sectionals in Dunlap. Congratulations team!
Girls basketball team captured 3rd place finish Saturday at ISU Redbird arena. Congratulations girls on an OUTSTANDING season!
The boys track and field team finished 2nd at the Illinois College Invite Friday night. Top placers for SHS were: Cameron Stuva 3rd in the 1600, Michael Simon 2nd in the 1600, the 4x8 relay team of Tyler Pence, David Thomas, Charlie Hoogland, and Nathan Hoffman placed 2nd, Shain Ford 2nd in the triple jump, the 4x4 relay team of Jordan Collins, Malik Harrison, Nick Moore and Dalton Timm also placed 2nd. Event winners were Nick Moore in the 800, and the 4x2 relay team of Jordan Collins, Malik Harrison, Dalton Timm, and Danan Beedie.
The Lady Senators Track Team finished 2nd in the Illinois College Indoor Invitational Friday night. Finishing in 1st place was the 4 x 200 relay team of Lexia Swope, Miriam Agamah, Chasity Newman, and Sarah Sepanski and Sarah Maxson in the high jump. Laurel Neposchlan broke her own school record in the pole vault with her second place vault of 11’6”. All of these girls qualified for the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet on March 26. Congratulations Ladies!
