Good morning Springfield High! Today is Friday, January 27, 2012 where successful Senators are productive; they participate in class, complete the work, and turn in the work. Thank you for Being A Senator!

JUNIORS, now is the time to be checking out these schools, hearing about requirements and deciding where you want to visit. Get a pass from Guidance or Mrs. Povse to attend.

Junior and Senior vocationally oriented students: A trip to tour the new Workforce Development Center at Lincoln Land Community College is planned for Feb. 7 in the morning. This new facility houses state of the art Culinary, Collision Repair, Auto Technology, HVAC and welding, Construction Trades, Mechatronics, Renewable Energies and truck driver training. If you are interested in any of these programs get a permission slip from Mrs. Povse, Mrs. Hays or in Guidance. The first 40 students who return slips and are academically eligible will get to go. Slips are due Jan. 31.

Applications for the Lincoln Land Community College foundation scholarship are now available. The LLCC honors college application is also available for students who have a minimum ACT score of 25. These are due April 2. The deadline for the Focus on Your Future Scholarship for LLCC, Robert Morris, UIS or Benedictine has been extended to Feb. 10.

The following new scholarships are now available: Sue Handy, SEA scholarship for future teachers; AHEPA scholarship for students of Greek heritage; the Springfield Lions Club for students planning a career in the health care field, especially those focusing on sight or hearing fields; The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority scholarships for African American students; The Fred S. Bailey Scholarship for students going to University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign who have shown a commitment to community, service, leadership and academics; and the Over the Moon Productions for students majoring in an aspect of theater arts.

Reminder to seniors and their parents/guardians: Tuesday, January 31 at 6:30 in the Commons is our FAFSA line-by-line presentation. If you are having trouble filing the FAFSA or need a jump start, please attend this workshop.

It is that time of year to start thinking about your Valentine. Carnations will be sold during both lunch shifts in the commons. Cost is $1. Flowers will be delivered February 10.

TOO GOOD A DEAL TO PASS UP! Purchase your tickets for a full Avanti's sandwich and or a full Avanti's loaf of bread through next Wednesday from a German class or German club student. Teachers and staff can purchase tickets from Eric Koeppel unless a German student sells to you first. Delivery is Thursday, February 9, during both lunch shifts and after school til 4pm in the Commons. There will be a limited number of extra sandwiches and bread available for purchase during lunch shifts on February 9. Alert your friends, family, and colleagues! Spanish Club bowling is today after school at Strike n' Spare West. See a Spanish teacher for a permission form. The form with a $2 refundable deposit is due by Thursday.

The English department’s literary magazine needs an editor. Interested? Contact Mrs. Eslahi in room 254.

Visions and Voices the English department’s literacy magazine wants to publish your short stories, poetry, and art. Bring them to Mrs. Eslahi in room 254.

As of February 1st, bus ticket will go up to $20 dollars instead of 15 do to the $.25 increase. I have 9 tickets left for $15.

The Do Something Club is supporting the "Teens for Jeans" campaign sponsored by Aeropostale. The campaign is designed to get jeans in the hands of THE HOMELESS! Students & staff can donate any old jeans of any brand or any size for each pair of jeans you donate you receive a 25% off coupon for new AERO jeans! We are competing as a school in a nation-wide contest whereby the school with the most jeans wins $5000 & JEANS FOR EVERY STUDENT! Drop-off boxes can be found in each school office or main entrance. Anime Club: There is a meeting after school today in the cafeteria. Don't forget your costume!

National Honor Society: There will be a meeting Tuesday and Wednesday next week after school in the library.

Kudos to Mrs. King in Room 350 and ALL of her U.S. History classes! The Girls Basketball team defeated Southeast 74-56 last night for a clean sweep in the City Tournament! Zahna Medley had a career high of 36 points! Kelsey Hulcher, Meghan Fetter, Anika Webster were all double figure scorers. Next game is Tuesday at Chatham. Great job ladies!!
