Good morning Springfield High! Today is Thursday, February 21, 2013 where successful Senators follow the classroom and school wide expectations and allow for learning by all throughout the building. Thank you for Being A Senator!

All course registration forms for the 2013-2014 school year are now past due. All completed late forms need to be returned to the guidance office no later than end of the school day Today.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission(ISAC) is sponsoring a program for students and parents of all grade levels to learn more about the college process, this Saturday morning, Feb. 23, from 9:00- 12:00 at UIS in the Public Affairs Center. The schedule of events is on the SHS website.

JUNIORS and undecided SENIORS: Get signed up to hear the representatives from the following colleges:
March 5 - SIU-Carbondale, 12:40
March 6- Lincoln College at lunch in the commons
March 7- University of Kentucky 9:25 (yeah, the Wildcats!)
SIU-Edwardsville 10:20
March 15- MacMurray College-at lunch in the commons
March 20- Blackburn College 8:30
March 21- LLCC- at lunch in the commons

Illinois College, Jacksonville, only a half hour away, will be hosting the annual Illinois College Exploration Fair with over 50 colleges and universities on March 7 from 6:30-8:00p.m in the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center.

The Bernie Koch(Cook) Sr. Cosmetology Scholarship is now available. If you plan to attend the University of Spa and Cosmetology Arts this scholarship will pay $1000. See Mrs. Povse for details.

The following scholarships are now posted on the database or are available from Mrs. Povse:
The Mu Delta Lambda and the Alpha Phi Alpha scholarships for African Americans are now available from Mrs. Povse, Apr. 15 deadline.
The Springfield Noon Lions for students entering health care fields is on the database and due April 1.

SENIORS INTERESTED IN BENEDICTINE: Apply by March 1st to get the Sangamon County $500 award. It is automatic if you apply by March 1.

SENIORS: If you and your parents have not completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and you plan to go to college or tech school next year you must get it done by the end of the month. Most schools have a March 1 deadline for FAFSA completion. The colleges are contacting us and asking us to remind you to get it completed. Additionally, if you do not complete by March 1 the Illinois MAP money will be gone.

Be aware that March 1 is also a deadline for many of the scholarships currently available. Pay attention to deadlines and try to have your applications completed ahead of time especially if a transcript is required.

JUNIORS: Get your permission slips for the Lincoln Land Community College trip in to Mrs. Povse as soon as possible.

JUNIORS: To assist you in preparing for the Prairie State ACT in April a free online ACT prep class is being offered. Register at zinch.com/shmoop-prep This will be free only for the next one-three months so sign up soon and prepare to get a great score.

JUNIORS & SENIORS: The tentative list for the Illinois State University college trip is posted outside Mrs. Povse's office, Rm 153A. There may be additions. If you have changed your mind and no longer wish to go please let her know ASAP.

Juniors! Student board member applications for the 2013/2014 school year are available in the Main office. A student must meet the following requirements to apply for the position of Student Board Member:
• Be an incoming high school senior for the 2013-14 school year
• Have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher
• Submit a one-page biographical sketch (double-spaced) outlining the student’s abilities, goals, and reasons why he/she is the best good choice as a Student Board Member
• Provide two written references from teachers, school administrators, or community members
• Provide contact information, including phone number and/or e-mail address.
Deadline for submission of materials is Friday, March 22, 2013.As in the past, students will return their application to their principal.

Tryouts for the 2013-2014 SHS Cheerleading squads are fast approaching. There is a mandatory tryout meeting that will be held February 28th at 5:30pm in the SHS commons. This is an informational meeting for candidates and parents/guardians that will provide all the details of the 2013-2014 schedule and contract’s financial, behavioral, academic and tryout obligations and expectations. The meeting is mandatory to be eligible to try out. Clinics for the tryouts will be held March 11th-14th from 3:45-6:30pm with tryouts being held Friday, March 15th beginning at 4:00pm. Tryout packets & the tryout schedule are available in the mail office or from Coach Povse in room 160.

There will be a short meeting for all girls planning on trying out for softball, today after school in room 316. If you have any questions see Coach Seiple.

Current senior NHS members: the next mandatory meeting is today. If you have a game after school and cannot attend the after school meeting, please stop by room 360 during A lunch or B lunch for the meeting. You will be verifying information that will be read at the ceremony on March 18. If you are absent, please submit appropriate documentation indicating your absence. January and February hours are due by the end of February.

Attention Baseball Players: There will be a short meeting Today after school in the commons to announce practice times for next week. That's baseball players, Thursday after school, in the commons.

Looking for summer employment? Kids First Sports, Inc is looking for Umpires for youth baseball games. You can pick up an application from the guidance office or Mrs. Devlin in room 121.

Tomorrow, is the last day to turn in Read for a Lifetime book reviews to Mrs. Dahmane.

Attention all Spanish classes and Spanish Club members: Friday is the class day to compete in the annual Lots of Latas canned food drive for the Salvation Army. Bring your canned food items to your Spanish teacher by 3:30 Friday. You could win $5.00, and your Spanish class could win a pizza lunch!

ALL STUDENTS and NHS STUDENTS: URGENT—Students are needed to volunteer at the Disability to Possibility-5 Conference which will be held on Saturday February 23rd at Springfield High School. Duties will include: child care assistance, hall guides, and lunch assistance. Please see Mrs. Ruedin to sign up.
