SENIORS: It is FAFSA time. What does that mean? It means that for you to get FREE money for college or technical school you must fill out the FAFSA document online. Go to FAFSA.GOV, use your last year's tax information and then update it when you/your parents get this year's done. It is important to get this done ASAP if you want to get in line for the free money.

Males who are applying for FAFSA and who are 18 must also register with the Selective Service System. Go to sss.gov and register.

The scholarships managed by the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln are now available on the scholarship database. These are both financial need based as well as merit or service based. All CFLL scholarships are due March 1.
Juniors and Seniors: Western Illinois University, Macomb will be on Feb. 20 with permission slips due by Feb. 13. Permission slips are in the Guidance Office or in the folder outside Mrs. Povse's office. This trip will leave at 8:00a.m. and return by 3:15.

JUNIORS: Mr. Barnes and Mrs. Povse will be taking a group of juniors to Lincoln Land Community College on Feb. 26 for a First Generation College Prep Day. The day is designed to help first generation college students with planning for college, be it community college or a 4-year. Pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Povse or Mr. Barnes or from the Guidance Office. Slips are due Feb. 18.

The Lincoln Land Community College Foundation scholarship is now available on the database or from Mrs. Povse. Deadline is March 3. This is also the application for the LLCC Honors Program.

SENIORS: If you are planning to apply to SIU-Carbondale you can get a FEE WAIVER and apply in person with Pete Lucas, our SIU rep on Feb. 18 at 12:40. Sign up with Mrs. Povse.

Juniors. Are you interested in receiving up to 12 college credits prior to graduating from high school? Are you interested in a $2,000 per year housing scholarship for college? Then you may be interested in attending the Commonwealth Honor's Academy.

Any Junior interested in attending The Commonwealth Honor's Academy at Murray State University this summer should see Mr. Barnes for more information.

If you bought a 2013 Capitoline yearbook, your supplement is in. Stop by Mrs. Eslahi's room, 254, after school and get yours.

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. There are a few carnations remaining for sale. Cost is $1 and students will be selling them before school and during both lunch shifts in the commons.

Make Plans to attend the 7th Annual Red and Black Gala, hosted by the Springfield High Booster club, scheduled for March 8th at the Springfield Hilton. All parents, alumnae and friends of SHS are invited to attend. Last year this one night netted close to $45,000 to support the many student clubs, athletics and other extracurricular activities. This is a great event and a wonderful place to connect with other SHS families and supporters and support these extra-curriculars. There will be many Auction items and various side events of all price ranges. Reservations are due by February 27th. Our kids are worth it!

Sophomores & Juniors: The Capital Area Career Center will have an Open House on Thursday, February 20, 4-6pm. It's located near Lincoln Land Community College off Toronto Rd. Call 529-5431 for further questions. That's 529-5431.

THE EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY TRIP HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED TO MARCH 6. PERMISSION SLIPS ARE ON MRS. POVSE'S DOOR OR IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE. STUDENTS WHO TURNED IN SLIPS EARLIER NEED NOT GET A NEW SLIP. PERMISSIONS ARE DUE THURSDAY, FEB. 20.

Enter the African American History Month Poster Contest or Essay Contest. For more information, see Mrs. Eslahi in room 254 or see the posters in the hallways.

ALL SOPHOMORES: We will be taking a group of sophomores to Lincoln Land for Career Day on the morning of Tuesday, Mar. 11. Students will have an opportunity to meet over 50 business representatives and ask valuable career questions. Permission slips are available in the Guidance Office. Only the 1st 90 students to return permission slips will attend. Signed permission slips must be returned to the Guidance Office by TUE, Mar. 4, 3:30pm.

PORTA Pool, Petersburg, will be providing the American Red Cross Life Guard Certification Training course April 14 - 19. Class times will be 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. April 14 - 17 (Monday - Thursday) and 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. April 18 - 19 (Friday, Saturday). Times may be adjusted according to participants' needs. The course will cover CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Water Rescue and Safety. Participants must be 15 years old by April 19, 2014. Seniors! Please check the display board of senior portraits outside the main office in the glass case. Let the yearbook staff know if you had a photograph taken at Grussenmeyer’s Class Act Photography for the yearbook and it is not on the display board.

The senior class will be selling breadsticks on both lunch shifts Today. However, due to an increase in cost, they will be sold at a new price of $2.50. This price will still get you a 3-pack of breadsticks and sauce.

Attention Baseball Players not out for a winter sport- There will be a short organizational meeting Friday in the Commons after school. That's baseball, meeting Friday after school in the Commons.

Class of 2017, class wear is here! Come to Room 130 after school to get your apparel.

The Lady Senator basketball team won a pair of games over the two day break by beating Normal U-High 54 to 41 and winning the conference outright by beating Jacksonville 71 to 41 on Senior Night. SHS will play their last regular season game tonight at Lincoln and will open up Regional play next Tuesday against SHG here at SHS.
