Good morning Springfield High! Today is Monday, March 24, 2014 where successful Senators are focused, alert, on task, and engaged in the classroom. Thank you for Being A Senator!

Juniors and undecided seniors: Pay attention to the college and military recruiter listing in the glass case outside of guidance. Plan to get a pass to attend schools you might be interested in.

College Recruiters- Get a pass in Guidance or from Mrs. Povse to attend.

Permission slips for the SIU-Edwardsville trip on April 1 are now available on Mrs. Povse's door or in the Guidance Office. Slips for this trip are due March 26.

The Western Illinois University bus trip has been re-scheduled for May 7. A few additional seats are available for this trip. See Mrs. Povse in 153A for a permission slip. Students who previously signed up are good to go.

Congressman Aaron Schock will be hosting an informational meeting for the five U.S. Service Academies on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00p.m. at the Springfield Air National Guard. If you are interested in the Air Force, Merchant Marine, West Point, Naval or Coast Guard Academies you should RSVP by April 15 to renard.jackson@ang.af.mil

Juniors. Are you interested in receiving up to 12 college credits prior to graduating from high school? Are you interested in a $2,000 per year housing scholarship for college? Then you may be interested in attending the Commonwealth Honor's Academy. Any Junior interested in attending The Commonwealth Honor's Academy at Murray State University this summer should see Mr. Barnes for more information.

The Springfield Urban League Scholarship is now available on the SHS scholarship database or from Mrs. Povse. Deadline is April 11. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority scholarship is now available on the database or from Mrs. Povse. Deadline is March 29. The Family Service Center is offering a scholarship to students who are adopted or who were or are in foster care. Deadline is April 29th.

Reminder: the Plato and Flora McCourtney renewable scholarship for students entering a scientific or technical field are due to Mrs. Povse tomorrow.

Attention seniors. Graduation announcement order pick up from Jostens will be before school, 7:30am to 8:15am, and during A and B lunches on March 27 in the Commons.

FREE T-SHIRTS FOR BLOOD DONORS!! Staff & Students 16 or older can donate blood to the Central Illinois Community Blood Center on Tue., March 25, from 8:30am-2:30pm. Students aged 16 must have a signed parental consent form. You must sign up during lunch, before school, or after school in the Guidance Office by 3:30 pm today. Teachers & Staff do not need to sign up, you can report to the auditorium at your convenience. Please donate. Mrs. Fisher, in the Main Office, is LIVING Proof that blood donations SAVE LIVES! She received 3 units of blood through two life-saving transfusions! Any questions-please see Alina Parikh.

Breaking news! Applications are now being accepted to enroll in newspaper class for next year. If you like writing, taking pictures, interviewing, deadlines and being published, this class may be the perfect fit for you! You must pick up an application and return it to Ms. Negele in room 362 by Friday, March 28. Enrollment in this spectacular class is based on the application and acceptance so get your application turned in soon and join the newspaper family!

SHS book fair is here! Stop by the library and browse. The proceeds go to stock the classroom libraries with great reads all year long.

SHS Schnirring Auditorium is being transformed into Harvard Law School for the fabulous production of “Legally Blonde The Musical”. Performance dates are March 28th and 29th at 7:30 p.m. and March 30th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available in the SHS main office— $5 for students and $8 for adults. You won’t want to miss this amazing musical, which features over 75 talented Springfield High School students. Get your tickets today!

Attention German Club! It's movie time! Please join us for the German movie "The Wedding Party" in room 250 after school on Wednesday, March 26. The parent-permission form can be found on the German Club website. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Hope to see you there.

The SHS boys track and field team placed 9th overall out of 29 2A and 3A teams at the Charleston Invite. Top placers for SHS were: Vernon Halloway 4th in the 400, 8th in the triple jump; Zach Stratton 6th in the long jump, 6th in the high jump, and the 4x800m relay team of Tyler Owens, Patrick Fitzgibbon, David Sias, and Heath Warren placed first. The boys will next compete at the Illinois Prep Top Times meet on Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan.

The Girls soccer team improved to 4 and 0 by winning the Carlinville Spring cup over the weekend.

The SHS Scholastic Bowl Team’s season came to a bittersweet end on Friday at the IHSA State Tournament. The team finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, falling to Bloomington and eventual champion IMSA before coming back in the final game of the season to knock of Carbondale. The victory put SHS into a 3 way tie for second place in pool A, but SHS lost a tiebreaker on points to fall just shy of earning the school’s second IHSA trophy. The team finished the season with a record of 85 and 22 and a top 5 ranking in the state coaches poll, their highest finish in team history. Congratulations on an outstanding season.
