Good morning Springfield High! Today is Thursday, September 11, 2014 where successful Senators are appropriate: they use appropriate language, tone and volume and follow the school dress code. Thank you for Being A Senator!

Today is a homeroom day. CACC students will report to homeroom at 8:15. The morning CACC bus will leave SHS at 9:00. Afternoon CACC students will leave SHS at 12:50.

Juniors and Seniors: Beginning this week college and military recruiters will be visiting SHS. Look at the schedule outside Mrs. Povse's office, room 153A or listen to the morning announcements to see if you are interested in attending. These schools will come once in the fall and then possibly again in the spring. If scheduled during a class period you must get a pass in Guidance or from Mrs. Povse to attend. If scheduled during lunch you do not need a pass. The representative will be at a table in the Commons.

Juniors: Today, Mr. Williams and Mrs. Povse will be doing Junior Orientation in the auditorium balcony during U.S. History classes. Report to class, your teacher will take attendance and then come to the auditorium BALCONY entrance.

Senior girls interested in engineering: Purdue University is hosting an free daylong event called Seniors Exploring Engineering at Purdue on Monday, Oct. 20 from 8:00-4:30. Registration is at www.engineering.purdue.edu/wiep or call 765-494-3889.

Washington University in St. Louis is holding an Admissions Information Session tomorrow from 7:00-8:00 in Room 100, Whitaker Hall on the Wash U. campus.

Students interested in the medical field: The Medical Explorers Post 998 is holding its kickoff meeting on Sept. 22 at 7:00p.m. in the 2nd floor Lincoln Conference Room at the SIU School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge. Park north of the building and enter near the flagpole.

Senior Portraits, which WILL BE included in this year's yearbook, must be taken at Class Act Photography located 484 South Durkin Drive. Seniors should call them at 787-4947 to make their appointments for the portraits, which cost $15. To be included in this year's yearbook, the portraits must be taken no later than December 12, 2014.

Attention Seniors: Your Senior Panoramic Picture is Scheduled for Friday, September 19th at 8:30 AM. Please go to your first period class and wait to be called to the front lawn for the picture. Seniors who attend CACC in the morning should wait until after the picture to report to the bus. Copies of the picture will be available in the commons on Monday, September 22nd during lunch. They are $25.00 for a large, laminated copy, and $35.00 for a large, laminated copy and a medium, laminated copy.

SENIORS: Check the Scholarship Database on the SHS Guidance website for a very few early scholarship opportunities. Zeta Phi Beta is due Sept. 15 and has many components. See if you want to apply. Acorn Equality is due Sept. 26. Go to SHS website. Click on Guidance then Scholarship Database.

Audition for In-Session showchoir will be held again tonight at 5:30pm in the choir room. Please come prepare to sing and learn quick choreography.

Attention All Gamers - The historical game club is back this year! If you like to play games like Risk, Axis & Allies, or Diplomacy, this club is for you. We meet at lunch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in room 328.

Any sophomore or junior interested in taking the PSAT/NMSQT test should bring $17 to the guidance office by Friday, September 12th to sign up. The PSAT/NMSQT is the Pre-SAT test, but it is also used for juniors to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship program and the National Achievement Scholarship program. Please see your Assistant Principal for more details.

Attention 9th grade students: If you are interested in a career in the medical field, please consider participating in the P4 Physician's Preparatory Pipeline Program. An informational parent meeting will be held September 15 from 6-7 p.m. at SIU School of Medicine. The application deadline is October 6. See Mrs. Gordy in the guidance office for the application.

Attention 10th graders who WENT TO THE DMV and got your permits, you MUST bring Ms. Dvorak the receipt of the permit if you would like to take behind the wheel.

21st Century started this week at 3:30 in the cafeteria. All students interested in joining the afterschool program can pick up an application at Ms. Tia's office next to guidance and return it there as well or at the main office.

The radio station, WDBR, is sponsoring a fundraising challenge to all schools in Sangamon County. The money raised will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. The top 5 schools that donate the most will be treated to a tailgate party with music, games from WDBR and nails done and temporary hair color by students at the Undergraduate School of Beauty. So- to raise money there will be 2 students during each lunch shift going around with jars to compete against each other to raise the most money. Please donate to this great cause so we can win a fantastic tailgate!! We have to be one of the top 5 schools in the county to win this. Let's do it!!

Homecoming tickets are on sale during both lunch shifts in the Commons. Prices for tickets are $10 for a single ticket and $15 for a couples ticket. Please buy your ticket ahead of time, as the price will be $15 per person at the dance. If you are bringing a friend from another school then you must have a guest form which can also be picked up in the Commons or the main office or the guidance office. No one will be admitted wearing tennis shoes or any denim. The dance is from 8:00- 11:00.

Spirit Week will kick off with the Parking Lot Party on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 2:00-4:00 and the Powder Puff football game starting at 4:00. The spirit days will be:

Attention all seniors and juniors! Make sure to vote for your Homecoming King and Queen Today during your lunch shift. Everyone will be allowed one vote for King and one vote for Queen so make your vote count!

Achtung German Club! Please turn in your membership fee of $5 and your sign-up form by Friday, September 12.

Achtung Achtung German Club! If you want to come to the German Club Oktoberfest/Kick-off Party at Southwind Park this Friday, please see a German teacher or come to room 250 to sign up. You may join us and enjoy nice brats only when you are a German Club member and when you have signed up to come.

Due to lack of space, basketball open gyms for underclassmen will be canceled until freshmen football is over. Any questions, see Coach Reed.

It’s GSA time! The GSA is holding a meeting next Tuesday, September 16th in Ms. Fox’s room after school until 4:30. Hope to see you there!

FREE T-SHIRTS FOR BLOOD DONORS!! Staff & Students 16 or older can donate blood to the Central Illinois Community Blood Center on Tue., September 23, from 8:30am-2:30pm. Students aged 16 must have a signed parental consent form. You must sign up during lunch-in the Commons, before school or after school-in the Guidance Office by 3:30 pm on Monday, September 22. Teachers & Staff do not need to sign up, you can report to the auditorium at your convenience. Please donate. Mrs. Fisher, in the Main Office, is LIVING Proof that blood donations SAVE LIVES! She received 3 units of blood through two life-saving transfusions! Any questions-please see Taylor Knapp.

The Senator volleyball team defeated Lincoln last night for a conference win, bringing their record to 8-1. The girls will play 5 matches this weekend in a Lincoln tournament. Come on up to Lincoln and cheer them on.
