Morning Announcements for Thursday, October 30, 2014

October 30, 2014

Good morning Springfield High! Today is Thursday, October 30, 2014 where successful Senators are respectful of self, others, and property! Thank you for Being A Senator!

SENIORS: October is Illinois College Application Month. We challenge all seniors to get their college applications completed this month.

Senior Portraits, which WILL BE included in this year's yearbook, must be taken at Class Act Photography located 484 South Durkin Drive. Seniors should call them at 787-4947 to make their appointments for the portraits, which cost $15. To be included in this year's yearbook, the portraits must be taken no later than December 12, 2014.

SENIORS: If you plan to apply to Eastern Illinois University here's a way you can do it for FREE! The EIU admissions officer will be here on November 18th to do on-site admissions. You will need to get a paper application from Mrs. Povse, fill it out and turn it back in to her. She will set appointments on the 18th with Mr. Sanders. We will have your official transcripts with test scores ready as well. He will also notify you of scholarship eligibility on that day. Save the $30 application fee and sign up with Mrs. Povse now.

Now's your chance to win a free yearbook! Every Friday in October there will be a raffle contest in the commons at lunch, where you can buy a ticket for $2. There will be 4 winners, one for each class. Don't forget!

Do you have at least a 26 ACT (or potential to get that score if you haven't tested yet) and need money for college? On November 12th representatives from the U.S. Navy will present information on the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship during 7th hour. If you are interested please sign up with Mrs. Povse.

It’s time! Bragging rights are on the line for the coveted title of DODGEBALL CHAMPION! The Booster Club’s annual Dodgeball Tournament will be held Monday, November 10th at 7pm in the SHS gymnasium. (There is no school November 11th.) Team registration and waiver forms are available on the SHS website and in the school office. So start gathering up your team and scheming a crazy costume. May the best team win!

Attention all Freshmen: Class wear will be sold all week. $15 for short sleeve tees, $18 for long sleeve shirts, and $20 for sweatpants. Place your order with Mrs. Davis in room 363 or the guidance office with Mrs. Kontio. Be sure to check out the design in your Literature class. Payment is due when you place your order. Show your support for the Class of 2018.

ATTENTION ALL NHS MEMBERS: If you missed this morning’s meeting, you must make the meeting after school in Mrs.Taft's room. You do not have to attend both meetings but you must be in attendance for at least one. We will be discussing October hours and the group service project. Questions? See one of your officers

Achtung, Achtung, German Club! We will be having a German Club meeting in the commons after school on Thursday. We will discuss our new German Club T-shirt, our upcoming German Advent calendar sale, and our upcoming Capture the Flag battle with our arch rival Spanish Club. We hope to see you there.

The first quarter of the school year is now over. So very many of you have done a great job in following the expectations of what it means to Be A Senator. At SHS we try to acknowledge that in different ways. For the first quarter acknowledgement, the requirements were no cell phone referrals, no dress code referrals, no suspensions, and no unexcused absences. A complete list of those who qualified was emailed to your teachers and will be posted outside the main office, the guidance office, and the attendance office. For those of you freshmen and sophomores who achieved this, you will be receiving a piece of Papa John's pizza at lunch in the Commons today. You will need to show your ID at the time. For those of you juniors and seniors who achieved this, you will be receiving a piece of Papa John's pizza at lunch in the Commons tomorrow. You will need to show your ID at the time.

Looking for an exciting travel opportunity with many educational opportunities? Join Mr. Telger and his crew for a European excursion that will cover three European countries in ten days this June. We will visit Germany, Switzerland, and Italy during this trip, and see the many fascinating sites along the way. For more information... see Mr. Telger in room 312.

"Did you know that in Illinois, 1 out of five children face hunger? If this fact startles you, then help the Do Something Club with their Halloween Food Drive called, "We Scare Hunger," from 3:30-6pm on Fri, October 31. You will go trick or treating for canned food items to help SHS students & local food Pantries in Springfield." We will have sign-ups in the Commons during lunch. Note: costumes are not allowed during the school day, so students may get dressed in the Commons after school or arrive in costume after 3:45 PM. If you have any questions, please see Grace Thompson or ask Mr. Williams in the Guidance Office.

Class of 2016 - Apparel order forms are here. See Mr. Kramer in Room 326 or a class officer to get one. All orders need to be turned in to Mr. Kramer and will be due by Wednesday, November 12.
