Good morning Springfield High! Today is Monday, February 23, 2015 where successful Senators are productive; they participate in class, complete the work, and turn in the work. Thank you for Being A Senator!

Bus #92 is running at least 15 minutes behind this AM.

Juniors and undecided seniors: It is time once again for the College and Military recruiters to visit. Check the list outside Mrs. Povse's office or in the glass case outside of Guidance. Passes are needed for presentations held during a class period. Get a pass in Guidance or from Mrs. Povse.

The following scholarships are now available on the database: Robert E. Von Behren and the Illinois Lumber and Material Dealers Association for careers in the building industry; Sangamon County Community Resources for programs leading to employment,must show financial need; William McElroy for males in pre-med; Sharon Miller IEA for future teachers. Delta Sigma Theta for African Americans and Sigma Nu Fraternity for males going to UIUC.
Seniors applying for the Plato and Flora McCourtney: a new version of the scholarship in pdf form is now on the database which will enable you to complete it online rather than on paper.

SENIORS: If you have not yet completed the FAFSA be aware that many schools require FAFSA completion by the end of February. Don't miss out on FREE money! If you need assistance see Mrs. Povse ASAP.

Seniors - Please check the large poster board with senior pictures in the glass case outside the main office. Please make sure your picture is correct and your name is spelled correctly. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Eslahi.

Juniors-FREE ACT EXAM here at Springfield HS on Mar 3rd & 4th. Everything, including pre-registration, will be done here at SHS so no need for you to do anything but make sure you are here at school on Mar 3rd & 4th and plan Dr. appointments for other days. TEACHERS-ACT details will continue to be emailed.

MAKING THE GRADE is Tuesday, February 24 from 1 - 3. Participating ninth grade students will receive a pass to report to the commons.

Students, Please participate in the Maya Angelou Essay and Poster Contests. For more info, see the posters in the hallways or Mrs. Eslahi in room 254.

There will be a mandatory meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24, in room 116 for any girl interested in trying out for softball. See Coach Koger for any questions.

The Superintendent's Student Roundtable will meet on March 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at 1900 W. Monroe. Any student with an interest in leadership and student affairs is welcome to attend. Please contact Julie Hammers at 525-4406 or Nicole Irlam at 525-3002 if you plan to attend.

Achtung Achtung German Club! We will have an important meeting in the commons tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24 to discuss the upcoming International Dinner. If you are planning to come to the dinner next week, please consider this meeting mandatory. See you there.

Class of 2016 will be selling hot chocolate again this Friday before school for $1 a cup!

A big congratulations goes out to Alex Gelber for going 4-1 at the State wrestling tournament and winning his last high school match to place third.

Congratulations to Old Capitol Art Fair Poster contest winners:
*Katie Brinkoetter-Best of Show...Her work will be featured on OCAF poster, $200.00, Billboards and exhibit. First time in OCAF history they chose a photo to showcase.
*Audra Ferry-1st place seniors...OCAF poster contest, $150.00 and exhibit
*Alina Sinha-1st place grades 9-11 OCAF poster contest...$100.00 and exhibit

Congratulations to Jakob Hankins and Jina Gary who competed in the State Finals for Speech on Friday and Saturday at the Peoria Convention Center. Jakob placed 12th in Prose and Jina placed 17th in Poetry. You represented Springfield High School well. Congratulations on a great season to both of you.

The Lady Senator basketball team won a regional title on Friday by beating Quincy Notre Dame 48 to 36. This win also marks Coach Scheffler’s 300th career win! SHS was led in scoring by Kierra Weir with 24 points. Next up for SHS is a sectional game tonight against top-ranked Normal U-High in Rochester starting at 7:30. Congrats and good luck.

The Solons were victorious Saturday at the sectional swim meet, winning their 4th sectional in 5 years. It was an all around effort again with virtually everyone dropping time. Leading off the day was Atticus winning diving to clinch a state berth. The 200 and 400 free relays of Jake freer, Jake Frech, Baz Jennison, and Gage Hamill will also be going to the state meet this week. However, this meet is also about heart and effort the Medley relay of Evan Weller, Bean Opfer, Eric Wise and Jake Freer came up just short ( 0.07 seconds)for second place. Josh Moore dropped 26 seconds in the 500 free and Jake Frech dropped 10 seconds to go under 5 minutes for the first time. Evan Weller also swam a PR in the 100 back and Tommy Rivera, in his last race, swam a PR by 2.2 seconds in the 100 Back, swimming under a minute and clinching 6th place. Eric Wise in his last High school race, dropped 0.9 seconds in the 100 breast, also a PR.
