Morning Announcements for Monday, May 3, 2010
Permission forms for anyone bringing a guest to Prom who is not a Springfield High student, are now available in the Main office. Guests must be at least in ninth grade, and not older than 19.
Summer School applications have arrived, and they can be picked up in the Guidance Office or Main Office.
Reminder to seniors: The Sangamon County Scholarship for low income entries is due Friday, May 7. SLICE has $40,000 to award to students in financial need. Get your application from Mr. Lawson or Mrs. Povse.
Seniors: The following scholarships are available from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
Georgia Pillow Rountree Scholarship awarded to a student who will attend a historically black college or university;
Alma Taylor Jones Scholarship is awarded to a student who is majoring in education and plans to teach as a career;
General Scholarship-awarded to student(s) based on the discretion of the scholarship committee and based on availability of overall scholarship funds. Essay and 2 letters of recommendation. Deadline is May 10.
SENIORS: Frontiers International announces a scholarship for students who will be entering a college or university in the fall and who need assistance with the cost of tuition. The scholarship is paid directly to the school. GPA of "C" or better, demonstrate community involvement, and an essay on why you should be considered for this scholarship. Deadline is May 14. See Mr. Lawson or Mrs. Povse for application.
SENIORS: The Springfield Urban League is offering the following scholarship:
For graduating seniors who have maintained a "C" average during junior and senior years, are accepted to a college or university and who demonstrate financial need. Application, essay, interview (interviews will be held June 2 and 3). Deadline is May 21. See Mr. Lawson or Mrs. Povse for application.
Tickets are available for the Golden Laurel Awards Ceremony to be held May 12 honoring National Honor Society seniors who will graduate as members of the Class of 2010. You can pick them up for $5 each from the main office, Mrs. Ruedin in Room 360 or Ms. Hubbard in Room 160.
Attention NHS juniors: you will meet Wednesday, May 5, to submit your five hours for April. Please meet before school at 7:50, or immediately after school to submit your hours and receive updated information.

Attention Seniors! There is a Senior Trip to the St Louis Zoo planned for Friday, May 14. You must pay $6 to reserve your spot. We are only taking the first 80 seniors, so sign up in the commons during lunch!
Sophomores! Class rings will be delivered on Friday, May 7 during both lunch shifts
The Children of Haiti need our help! This Friday the Science department is helping out by selling Help for Haiti t-shirts for $10. You can purchase your shirt from any Science teacher or in the commons. Money due at the time of purchase
Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! “Be A Senator” is selling Papa John’s Pizza for $2 a slice this Thursday during both lunch shifts. Remember Pizza Thursday, Thursday, Thursday!
Chess Club will be meeting at 7:40 AM Thursday in Dr. Lescault’s room.
The boys track and field team competed at the Prospect Invite on Friday night. The meet was shortened due to storms with 5 events remaining. Top placers for SHS were: Shane Ford 10th in the triple jump; the 4x100 relay team of Titus Hughes, Marquis Robinson, Malik Harrison, and Jordan Collins placed 7th; Titus also placed 2nd in the high jump, and Justin Lee placed 2nd in the 800. The boys will compete next at the city track meet Tuesday night at Southeast high school. Come out and support SHS!!
Taking only 10 runners, the Lady Senators Track Team made a decent showing at the Urbana Invitational Friday night. The 4 x 800 team of Maddie Alexander, Christy Rolf, Maggie Cornelius, and Kirby Hale won first place with a season best time of 10:03. Kirby Hale and Christy Rolf placed 2nd and 3rd in the 1600. Christina Kropid ran a 1:01.1 and Miriam Agamah a 1:02.9 (both personal records) and placed 4th and 5th in the 400. The Lady Senators next meet is the Central State 8 conference meet this Friday at Memorial Stadium.
