Good morning Springfield High! Today is Wednesday, November 14, 2018

This is a friendly reminder to all students that coats, backpacks and blankets are not allowed in classrooms.  Those items must be left in lockers, cars or at home.  The weather is changing and it’s a good idea to dress in layers or bring a sweatshirt.

Picture retake day is Monday, November 19th.  Students should get their retakes at lunch or after school if possible.  

Pick up your school pictures and id's in room 254.

Seniors, to be included in this year's yearbook you must take your senior portraits by winter break.  Seniors, Grussenmeyer will be at SHS on December 5th and 12th from 2:30-5:00 to take senior portraits or you can call Grussenmeyer Photography at 787-6688 to set up a time to take senior portraits.  Seniors you must turn in your baby pictures, room 254.

Congratulations to the Art Department and the CTE Department for having all of their students on time to first hour! The Be A Senator Team rewarded nearly 200 students with treats! Be on the look out and be on time to class, you never know when Be A Senator will be in your classroom! Thanks for being a Senator!!

PIZZA, PIZZA, PIZZA, THURSDAY, THURSDAY, THURSDAY!! The Be A Senator Team will be selling hot, delicious Papa John's pizza on Thursday. For only $2 a slice, you can enjoy a piece of pepperoni, cheese, or sausage. Get it before its gone!! Thanks for supporting Be A Senator!!

SAVE THE DATE! On December 1st from 6-11pm Sangamon CEO is hosting a Holiday Village at the state fairgrounds. This will include games, cookies, an appearance from Santa, a spooky haunted trail and so much more! It is fun for everyone! Tickets will be sold at both lunch shifts in the commons for $10. 

We are having a City T-Shirt Contest that is open to all SHS students.  The requirements are as follows, submit your drawing to the box in the main office by Wednesday, November 21st. The winning submission will receive a $50 gift card.  A few requirements:  All four schools need to be equally included on the shirt; The design has to include “City Tournament” and “2019”; The design needs to work in either all black or all white to be printed on the shirt; We can only print on one side of the shirt.

Want to be part of a group who provides school supplies to students in need? Pen in a Box will have its first meeting of the year today after school in Mrs. Eaton’s room, 366. This is a great way to volunteer without a huge time commitment. Your participation will help make the project a success.

Order your 2018-2019 Capitoline Yearbook now at $60 a copy.  Bring your check, money order or cash to room 254.

Did you all enjoy the day off Monday?  Remember to thank a vet!  Thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project and their services Jason Earhart a veteran who was two weeks shy of his 20th birthday when his Humvee took a direct hit from two anti-tank mines and suffered the visible wounds of losing his left leg and third degree burns over 60 percent of his body along with a traumatic brain injury could also celebrate the day as he continues his journey to living life independently.  His ongoing therapies to be able to live independently require donations from people just like us.  If you enjoyed your day off Monday please remember to donate today and tomorrow to the Wounded Warrior Project.  Donation jars will be near the school store today and tomorrow during both lunch shifts.  Help Ms. Troike’s work classes reach their goal of a $500 donation !!!!

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Scholastic Bowl team for a second place finish at the CS8 JV Tournament this weekend. They finished the day with only one loss to U-High with a score of 280-300. Maggie Sturm was the overall high scorer with 430 points for the day. Jack Casey had 340 points, also placing in the top 5 high scorers. Jacob Allen scored 100 points and Naina Shailesh scored 70 points over the course of the day. Well done!!  Another GREAT night of SHS Scholastic Bowl in CS8 play! JV and Varsity swept all 3 matches last night! High scorer for JV was Jack Casey with 200 points. Aidan Fein led the Varsity with 170 and Jack Allen racked up 120 points. Practice will be held after school on Friday at Franklin until 5:30. Come hungry-there will be pizza!

Are you interested in business and learning how to invest in the stock market? The Springfield Legacy Investment Club is meeting today in room 216 right after school from 2:30-3:30. Snacks will be provided!

The SHS Photo Video club will be meeting today right after school in the commons to continue writing. Tomorrow we will again be meeting in room 233 to continue the lighting 101 for those interested in portraits and photography. Not a member of the club? This is still open to newcomers if you are interested

Thanks to everyone who came out to help build and paint sets for the fall play, “Ask Any Girl.” We had an incredible response and they are looking great! 

If you are a part of the fall play—this includes: cast, staff, stage crew, lighting, and sound technicians, please meet in the auditorium at 5:30. It’s going to be an exciting week!

Looking for something different to do? Make plans to see the SHS fall play, “Ask Any Girl.” It’s a cool and kitschy retro stage production set in the 1950s. You have only three opportunities to see it, though! Showtimes are:
Friday, Nov 16, at 7pm; 
Sat, Nov 17, at 7pm; 
and Sun, Nov I8, at 2pm. 
Tickets, available at the door, are 
$5 for students and senior citizens, and $7 for adults.

The Girls Swim and Dive team competed in the sectional meet on Saturday. Junior Katie Bilinsky is the sectional diving champion and will be competing in the state meet this weekend. Highlights include the medley relay consisting of Maddie Sievers, Alexandra Bradley, Healy Funderburg and Maddie Owczarzak, the 200 freestyle relay consisting of Rhiannon Roberts, Lara Faeseler, Alexandra Bradley, and Brookelynn Kosek, and the 400 free relay consisting of Healy Funderburg, Kayleigh Minder, Maddie Owczarzak and Grace Anders. In the 500 free, Healy Funderburg placed 9th overall and dropped 9 seconds, Maddie Sievers dropped 22 seconds for a personal record. In the 50 yard freestyle, Grace Anders and Lili Tohme both swam personal records. Every swimmer posted at least one new individual record at the meet, and SHS took 5th overall out of a field of 19 teams. Congrats on a great season and good luck to Katie Bilinsky this weekend! 

All cross country athletes;  banquet forms need to be turned in to Coach Devlin this Thursday ( November 15th).

The Lady Senator basketball team started the new season by losing to Metamora 53 to 43. Leading SHS in scoring was Maya Fetter with 11 points. Next up for SHS is two games Saturday against Rockford East and Danville Schlarman.

Hey, are you interested in being on the Academic Challenge Team?  Students compete in biology, chemistry, physics, English, math, computer science and graphic design in a team format contest.  We meet a couple times a month. It’s fun and challenging and come and sign up in room 510, Mr. Covey’s room. Come to the first meeting to learn more Tuesday, November 20 at 3:25 in Mr. Covey’s room.  All grades and brains are welcome!!
