Membership Information and Welcome

August 9, 2012

Dear Parents,
By way of introduction, I am Jim Bremhorst, President of the Springfield High School Parent-Teacher Organization. I hope that you and your family have had a relaxing summer.
On behalf of the officers and members of the PTO, I invite you to join our organization. Membership for the year is only $15. Your membership has a number of advantages for you individually, for parents collectively and for Springfield High School.
Let’s start with the last first. The SHS PTO supports a number of activities that directly benefit the educational program at the School. We fund a Teacher Grant program to supply equipment, books and learning materials for the classrooms that are not otherwise provided by the School District. Throughout the year, we host events that honor SHS students, including the Honor Roll breakfast, the National Honor Society Induction and Senior Recognition Night. The PTO underwrites much of the School’s “Be a Senator” program, which encourages and recognizes attendance and good citizenship within the School. We also provide a Brain Food Breakfast to support the Junior Class as they take the ACT and the Prairie State Achievement Exam. Not to ignore teachers, we host three teacher appreciation events during the academic year, in addition to providing support for classroom initiatives.
For parents collectively, a strong, well-supported PTO plays a critical role. We take seriously the obligation to raise issues of concern to parents with the School Administration and, where necessary, the Superintendent and the Board of Education. Put simply, we often serve as the eyes, ears and voice of parents on behalf of our children and their education.
Finally, membership in the PTO can be of benefit to you directly. Monthly PTO meetings give you the opportunity to learn in detail about issues and accomplishments at SHS. This also offers you a chance to raise issues of concern to you. To the extent you want to be involved, the activities detailed above give you a chance to see life in the School firsthand.
We sincerely hope that you will join the Springfield High PTO. A membership form is attached with details about membership dues and an opportunity to make a donation to support PTO projects if you choose. We encourage families to join the PTO through this mailing so that we can get you on our communications lists as the school year begins. Not sure whether to join the Boosters or the PTO? Many, many families join both!

Thank you for your consideration. Go Senators!
Sincerely,
