Last night was our family reading night. It was a great success. It was well attended and everyone enjoyed the books, the snacks, and the conversation around getting our children to read.
For those who could not attend, the highlights were as follows:
1. Read with and to your child, regardless of their grade level. Even 5th graders like to be read to sometimes, plus it is a great way to enjoy a good novel together. One of my favorite authors for this is Neil Gaiman.
2. Let them read what they are interested in. If they read the Game Informer or comic books, that is perfectly fine. If it is books versions of movies they have seen or magazines they like, let them read it.
3. Ask your children questions that check if they understand what they are reading.
