The National Book Award Foundation awards one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the nation. Every year, nominations are announced in the fall in the following categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people's literature.

Every year, the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) creates a list of 20 books that have been recommended by teachers, students, and librarians. In February, if students have read at least 3 books, they can vote for their favorite book of the 20 on the list. The winner is announced around March every year.
