Did you know that yesterday was World Bee Day?  On this day, people learn about the jobs of bees and other pollinators.  Do you remember when we learned about bees in the classroom?  You had a bee bracelet and your “bee legs” got in the pollen when searching for nectar.

On the right there are some facts that a three year old told her mom.  Since you are smarter than the average three year old, which ones are not true facts for bees?

Here is a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA05LOfPblY with facts and great pictures of bees.

Here is another short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M93qXQWaBdE.  It shows Rosseau playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the piano.  There are lights that show the notes as they are played.  Why do you think this song is called Flight of the Bumblebee?

Challenge:  This is the last day to earn a chance to win the $15 Sonic Gift Card!  Complete today's work by 1:30 p.m. so I can add your name to the bucket.  There can only be one lucky winner and I will draw the name at 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, May 21. You also have to be present at our last Zoom meeting to win.

I hope to see everyone there!

iPad Return Date/Pick Up Student Supplies

Please return technology (iPads, hotspots, AND chargers) using the schedule.  If you have children with different last names, please choose one time and bring all technology then.

Once you pull in front of the school, a staff member will come to your car to collect all technology.  Please have devices CHARGED AND TURNED ON when you come.  The staff member will take the technology in to the building to be checked in.  They will come back to your car with a print out noting technology status, including damage or missing items, and your student’s school supplies. As you enter the parking lot, you will come to a table.  There you can pick up: Art to Remember orders, Yearbook pre- orders and printed report cards.  If you did not pre- order a yearbook, you may call to check for extra yearbooks on June 1.

If you have a school library book at home, it may be turned in with technology.

If you have students at multiple district schools, you can return all technology to one school.

If you do not have technology to return, when you pull in front of the school, we will bring your student’s supplies out to your car.

As we are operating under CDC guidelines, staff will be wearing masks and our numbers will be kept to a minimum.  We ask for families to be patient as we work to collect technology, and return supplies, as quickly as possible.

Thank you- We will see you next week!

Let’s have a Terrific Tuesday!

It is Limerick Day!  Limericks are silly poems with 5 lines that use a special AABBA pattern.  Today is Edward Lear’s birthday.  He  made these poems popular with his Book of Nonsense.  You can read and listen to some limericks here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP53CvrQmac

When you are working on math today, make sure to watch the video.  It will help you to understand how to make equal shares with different shapes.  It is a little tricky.

When you are working on writing, you will need to put your brainstormed ideas together to make a big idea for each page of your book.  Some big ideas you might use are animals of the habitat and features of the habitat.  If you can’t remember lots of facts about any habitat go to Brain Pop Jr.  https://jr.brainpop.com/science/habitats/ and re-watch a video.

MyOn.com does not send me a report of the books you read so make sure that you complete the SeeSaw assignment to let me know that you have been reading.  The login information is in the Seesaw directions.

Recently, we have been working with plane shapes.  These shapes are 2D and flat.  Did you know that you can make pictures with plane shapes?  Look at this rooster.  What shapes are used to make the picture?  How many quadrilaterals?  How many triangles?  What other shapes are used?

There is a Chinese puzzle called a Tangram.  It is made from a square cut into 7 pieces.  These pieces are used to make pictures.  This cat is an example of a picture made from Tangram pieces.  How many triangles do you see?  How many quadrilaterals?

•  If you want to use your child's iPad from school for distance learning, the last day to pick it up is on Friday, April 25 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm.  Please let me know if you plan to pick up your child’s iPad.

•  If you need Internet service for your home for your child to complete their school work, please email me today.  District 186 has some hot spots available.

•  If you want to share information about your child regarding placement for third grade, email Mrs. Russell ( jhanson@sps186.org) by Monday, April 27.

Happy Monday, Second Graders! β˜€οΈ

Did you know that it is National Lima Bean Respect Day?  Do you like lima beans?  I actually like them! So does Madelyn but Carter thinks they are yucky.😝

Here is a lima bean joke to start your day.

⬇️

Teacher:  Name three kinds of beans.

Student:  Lima beans, string beans and human beans.

Today you will be reading the Scholastic News. (see email for our class code). You will also be using Brainpop Jr.  (see email for username/password)

There are more activities in SeeSaw.  This is a good place to store our work.  (Let me know if you have trouble signing in.)

  • Go to the app (It say CLASS and looks like a bluish-green bowtie)

  • Click on activities.

  • Find your assignments after you watch the videos.  If you don’t watch the videos or read the Scholastic News it will be hard to do the work.  Remember the tool that looks like a finger pointing will allow you to tap on the picture and move it when you do the Water Habitat Sort.

Good morning, Second Graders!

How have you been feeling this week?  It seems like I have had a lot of different feelings. πŸ˜€ ☹️ 😠

Sometimes things seem too hard but I need to remember not to give up and to keep trying!

This link will take you to a video about Olaf.  He has a problem but he doesn’t give up! Go watch it.  But come right back here when you are done.  Don’t get distracted by other videos.  (Save those for later!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An2OaIbPSII

Olaf has to try many things to solve the problem.  And…sometimes we even need help to solve the problem. If you have questions, ask someone in your family or send me an email.

Today is our Zoom meeting at 1:00.  I am very excited to see everyone.  Today’s emailed newsletter has the link to help you join. You can even practice with the link right now.  It will give you a message that the meeting hasn’t started yet.  If you get that message you know you will be able to join when it starts at 1:00.

Surprise, Second Graders!  It’s snowing! β„️❄️❄️

This graph on my weather app shows that we are almost equally likely to get little to no snow or up to 2 inches.  I can tell because those bars are about the same.  We are not likely to get more than 2 inches and it is snowing now so it is impossible to get no snow.

What do you think the word accumulation means?  I think you can tell by using all the clues on the page to help.

There are several things to do today.  It’s Thursday so remember to go visit Mrs. Beger’s web page.  She has an activity and an active blog.  That means that she asks you a question and you type your answer.  She is also checking her list to make sure that you participate in art each week.  Check yesterday’s work from SeeSaw because I have written you a note.  You may need to fix something up for me and submit the assignment again.  Remember that we can always learn from our mistakes.  :)

Go find some warm, fuzzy socks and let’s get started!

Happy Wednesday Second Graders!

Let’s check in from yesterday.  Part of my job was to check off these 4 things for you.  How did you do?

  • Get the green light on Reflex

  • Color Poem on See Saw or emailed picture

  • Line Plot Kahoot!

  • 20 minutes of independent reading

I was happy to see lots of you completing work and sending it to me.  If you forgot to do one or two of these things yesterday, do it today so you can get caught up. Today you need to use the SeeSaw app for your reading and math assignment.

It works best if you open the newsletter on your iPad and follow all the links.  For example, make sure you watch the math video before you do the math practice.

I am also checking email from 9 - 2 every day.  If you have a question, send me an email.  I will try to get back to you right away especially with tech questions.  You can also use Class Dojo as a student.  Ask an adult in your house to help you get logged in as a student so you can send me messages and pictures of your work.  I sent all families a link on Class Dojo yesterday.

Go click on the newsletter and get started! πŸ˜ƒ

PS - Hint:  When you make a line plot in SeeSaw, you may want to use the marker to make dots instead of Xs.

Welcome Back! πŸ˜ƒ  I hope you were able to do some fun things over spring breakβ˜€οΈ.  I stained our fence with Madelyn and Carter, took some walks🚢🏽‍♀️ and had a wonderful dinner for Easter🐰 . Now, I hope you are ready to dive into some remote learning activities!

Each day I will email you a daily newsletter and post it on our class web page.  It will have blue links to the learning and activities for the day.  I will be checking off the activities that you complete and sharing that information with Mrs. Russell and Mr. Gage.  We will have a class Zoom meeting at 1:00 on Fridays.  I will send more information about that later.

Remember that you can send me email mdbeck@sps186.org with questions and photos of your learning or post your work on SeeSaw.

It is important to check your email and complete the activities every day.

Have an awesome day!
