Health & Science Academy | The Health & Science Academy (HSA) is a small school within Southeast High School for students interested in medical careers. The HSA is committed to a high quality education that addresses academic, intellectual, social, and work-related skills. The program is intended for students who have good attendance, a high level of self-motivation, and good academic skills.
•Four-year program for grades 9–12
•Learning organized around health science careers
•Smaller class sizes (approximately 25 students)
•Cohort model with a dedicated team of three teachers throughout the program
•HSA core classes include English, Social Studies, Science, and Principles of Biomedical Science (Project Lead the Way), with two additional optional biomedical science courses
•Math and elective courses are taken outside of the HSA
•Students meet the same graduation requirements as all District 186 students
•Partnerships with Springfield higher education institutions, including the University of Illinois Springfield and St. John’s College of Nursing
•Guest speakers from St. John’s Hospital, Memorial Medical Center, Springfield Clinic, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and other healthcare organizations share real-world career pathways
This program is open to all incoming 9th graders in District 186 boundaries.
