band instruments

District 186 is excited to once again offer the After-School Beginning Band Program for students currently enrolled in 5th grade. This is the third year of our pilot program!

Families interested in enrolling must attend an informational meeting with their student. At this meeting, families will learn program details, sign student/parent contracts, and participate in instrument selection.


Program Details

  • Location: Washington Middle School

  • Days/Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:15–5:15 p.m.

    (A snack will be provided before lessons begin.)

  • Instructors: Certified District 186 music teachers, many of whom are current Band Directors

  • Instruments Offered: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone

  • Instrument Rental: Available through District 186 for a small fee, or through local music stores

  • Transportation: District 186 bus transportation from elementary schools may be available. Families must pick students up at 5:15 p.m. at Washington Middle School.

  • Calendar: A full program calendar will be provided at the informational meeting.


Informational Meetings

Please plan to attend one of the following meetings with your 5th grade student:

  • Washington Middle School — Thursday, Sept. 11, 6:00–6:30 p.m.

  • Jefferson Middle School — Monday, Sept. 15, 6:00–6:30 p.m.

  • Grant Middle School — Tuesday, Sept. 16, 6:00–6:30 p.m.

Following the short presentation, students will have the opportunity to try instruments and select their top three preferences. Our goal is to have instruments available for rental by the first night of the program.
